Wispr Flow Alternatives: Dictation Tools Compared

By . Updated October 21, 2026.

I run my business in Germany. Monetary examples use euros unless another currency is stated.

I rarely type prompts and instructions for AI tools anymore; I dictate them. This also includes emails and drafts for articles, for which I use Wispr Flow. I’ve tested all the popular dictation tools and have settled on Wispr Flow.

However, Wispr Flow isn’t the right choice for everyone. In my courses, I often say that there are thousands of dictation solutions available. I use Wispr Flow, but you might prefer something else.

Here, I compare six alternatives. I won’t share my own performance measurements. All pricing, platform, language, and data privacy information comes from the manufacturers, as of October 13, 2026. Prices often change, so please verify them before making a purchase.

Why Consider Alternatives?

Wispr Flow processes every dictation in the cloud. Without an internet connection, nothing works, and according to their privacy policy, data is transmitted to the United States. For prompts and your own drafts without any personal data, this is usually not a major concern. However, it’s different when dealing with customer data.

Here are three reasons to consider a different tool:

  1. Data Privacy: You want your speech to never leave your device.
  2. Cost: You prefer a one-time payment rather than a monthly subscription.
  3. Device Compatibility: Your device isn’t supported, such as a Windows laptop with an ARM chip.

I provide a detailed explanation of how Wispr Flow works and what it costs in my Wispr Flow review.

Platforms: Which Tools Work Where?

Tool Platforms Local or Cloud
Wispr Flow (for comparison) Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android Cloud only
Superwhisper Mac (macOS 14 and later), Windows 10 and 11, iPhone, Android Local or Cloud (user selectable)
VoiceInk Mac (Apple Silicon, macOS 14.4 and later), iPhone, iPad Local, Cloud only with your own API key
MacWhisper Mac, plus an app for iPhone and iPad Local, Cloud optional
Aqua Voice Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android Cloud
macOS Dictation Mac German language recognition possible on the device
Windows Voice Typing Windows 10 and 11 Cloud (Microsoft Azure)
Windows Voice Access Windows 11 (version 22H2 and later) On-device

Pricing Comparison

Tool Price (as stated by manufacturer, as of October 13, 2026)
Wispr Flow Free with 2,000 words per week on desktop. Otherwise, US$15 per month or US$12 per month with an annual subscription
Superwhisper Free with unlimited dictation using local Whisper models. Otherwise, US$8.49 per month, US$84.99 per year, or US$249.99 as a one-time purchase
VoiceInk One-time purchase: US$25 for a Mac, US$39 for two, US$49 for three
MacWhisper Free. Otherwise, a one-time payment of €64 (according to their website)
Aqua Voice 1,000 words free. Otherwise, US$10 per month or US$8 per month with an annual subscription
macOS and Windows Included in the operating system

German Language Support and Data Privacy

The information below indicates whether a tool supports German, as stated by the manufacturer.

Tool German Language Support Data Privacy for Businesses
Wispr Flow Yes, supports over 100 languages Cloud, data transmitted to the United States, data processing agreement only available with the “Growth” plan
Superwhisper Yes, depending on the model Completely local operation possible, data processing agreement available for self-signing
VoiceInk Yes, depending on the model Local, source code open (GPL v3)
MacWhisper Yes, supports 100 languages Local, Cloud only on request
Aqua Voice Yes, supports 49 languages Cloud, Zero Data Retention only available with the “Business” plan
macOS Dictation Yes Data processed on the device, verifiable in keyboard settings
Windows Voice Typing Yes Microsoft Cloud
Windows Voice Access Yes, German (Germany) On-device

“Local” in this table means that speech recognition runs on your device. If you enable cloud features with local tools, such as AI post-processing using OpenAI, your text may leave your device again. Therefore, please check every setting before dictating customer data.

The Alternatives in Detail

Superwhisper: Local or Cloud, on All Devices

Superwhisper offers the most options. The app runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android. You choose, for each mode, whether to use a local model or a cloud model to recognize your speech. According to their documentation, you can run recognition and post-processing entirely on your device. This ensures that nothing leaves your device.

The free plan allows unlimited dictation using local Whisper models. A paid subscription unlocks cloud models, additional local models, AI modes, and the ability to transcribe audio files. A paid license, according to their pricing page, covers all your devices.

Two limitations: Superwhisper requires macOS 14. For Intel Macs, the manufacturer recommends cloud models, while local models reportedly work best on Apple Silicon. For a direct comparison, see Wispr Flow vs. Superwhisper.

VoiceInk: One-Time Purchase for Mac

VoiceInk is a Mac app featuring local models and a one-time price. According to the FAQ, your voice data remains on your Mac. Cloud processing is optional; only the text is sent to the provider of your choice. The developer publishes the source code on GitHub under the GPL v3 license.

For German, the model overview includes models such as Cohere Transcribe and Nemotron Latin. However, VoiceInk only runs on Macs with Apple Silicon running macOS 14.4. It is not available for Windows. The manufacturer states that a beta version of the app for iPhone and iPad is currently available for free.

MacWhisper: For Audio Recordings and Interviews

MacWhisper is primarily a tool for recordings. You simply drag an audio file into the app and receive a transcript. According to the manufacturer, the transcription process takes place on your Mac, and no data leaves the device. MacWhisper also offers system-wide dictation, allowing you to dictate into any app.

I personally find MacWhisper useful. One way I use it in my courses is to record voice memos on the go and then transcribe them on my computer later. For quick dictation into any app, I prefer Wispr Flow.

The Pro version costs a one-time fee of €64, according to the website. On the Gumroad shop, the price was listed as €65 on October 13, 2026.

Aqua Voice: Cloud Dictation with a Custom Model

Aqua Voice works similarly to Wispr Flow. You hold down a key, speak, and the text appears formatted in any app. The recognition process takes place in the cloud using a proprietary model called Avalon. Aqua Voice is available for Mac, Windows, iPhone, and, as of October 2026, for Android.

According to the pricing page, Aqua Voice is certified according to SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. As of September 2026, Aqua Voice advertises compliance with GDPR and HIPAA. Zero data retention is only offered in the Business plan for teams of two or more users. German is listed as a supported language according to the FAQ.

The Dictation Feature of macOS

The simplest alternative is already built into your Mac. According to Apple, you can dictate anywhere you can type. For German, Apple supports on-device dictation and automatic punctuation, according to the feature overview. You can check if your dictations remain on your Mac by checking the settings under Keyboard, then Dictation.

The difference from Wispr Flow lies in post-processing. The built-in macOS dictation feature automatically adds punctuation, while you control paragraph breaks using voice commands like “new paragraph.” Apple does not describe any features for removing filler words or adjusting the tone of your voice within different apps.

Windows: Speech Recognition and Voice Access

Windows includes two tools. You can launch Voice Typing by pressing the Windows key plus H. It uses Microsoft Azure’s online speech recognition service and therefore requires an internet connection. German is supported.

Voice Access on Windows 11 allows you to control your entire PC using your voice and also dictate text. After downloading the language files once, it reportedly works without an internet connection, according to Microsoft. German (Germany) is supported.

In law firms and government agencies, Dragon is also widely used. Nuance, now part of Microsoft, promotes Dragon Professional v16 for government agencies, banks, insurance companies, and the legal profession. The manufacturer’s website does not list a price; quotes are provided through distributors.

Which Alternative is Right for You?

Mac and Everything Local: If you only have a Mac with Apple Silicon and want to pay a one-time fee, consider VoiceInk. If you need more settings or want to cover Windows and mobile devices, consider Superwhisper.

Windows in a Business Environment: Start with Voice Access on Windows 11. It’s free and works on your device. If you need formatted text in every app, consider Superwhisper with local models or Wispr Flow (starting with the Growth plan, which requires a contract for processing services). Wispr Flow is not compatible with Windows devices using ARM chips.

Start for Free: First, test the built-in dictation feature of your system. If that doesn’t meet your needs, the free tier of Superwhisper with local models is the next step.

Extensive recordings and interviews: MacWhisper. This tool is designed for files, not for quickly dictating into emails.

Get clean text quickly, in any app, on any device: That’s my experience. I’m sticking with Wispr Flow because it works seamlessly in every application and I dictate a great deal with it. In my video, I recorded 63,941 words over eight weeks.

Regardless of which tool you choose, dictation is worthwhile as soon as you work extensively with AI. You provide Claude and ChatGPT with more context than you ever would by typing. I show you how I combine AI tools in my daily life in AI Tools for Freelancers. You can find details on how I work with Claude Code using voice in my Claude Code tutorial.
