Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper: Which Dictation Tool Fits?
Wispr Flow and Superwhisper solve the same problem. You press a key, speak, and in the app you’ll be using, clean text appears. The main difference lies in where your speech is processed.
I use Wispr Flow for emails, prompts, and instructions to AI tools. I’ve tested all the popular dictation tools and have stuck with Wispr Flow. I haven’t published any comparative test results between the two apps. Therefore, the comparison below is based on information provided by the manufacturers, as of October 13, 2026. Where I draw on my own experience, I will state that explicitly.
In a Nutshell
- Wispr Flow is ideal if you want clean text immediately, on any device, without setting up any models or modes. However, all dictation is processed in the cloud.
- Superwhisper is best if you don’t want your speech leaving your device, if you need to dictate offline, or if you prefer a one-time payment.

Features and Usage
Both apps write into any text field, and both learn names and specialized terms through their own dictionaries. The difference lies in the user experience.
Wispr Flow focuses on minimal settings. On a Mac, you hold down the Fn key, speak, and release. The app removes filler words, adds punctuation, and adjusts the tone to match the app you’ll be writing in. According to Data Controls, Flow uses the name of the app and the text in the input field. In my video about Wispr Flow, I demonstrate how few settings I needed to configure: setting the key, choosing languages, and adding names to the dictionary.
Superwhisper works with modes. Each mode combines a speech recognition model with an optional AI model and instructions for post-processing. There are pre-built modes like “Message” or “Email,” and you can create your own. On a Mac, you start by pressing Option plus the spacebar (according to Quickstart guide). This offers more power, but requires a learning curve.
Superwhisper, in the Pro tier, also transcribes audio and video files.
Platforms and Devices
Both run on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android. However, the details differ:
- Older Mac: Wispr Flow requires macOS 12. Superwhisper requires macOS 14 (according to the Quickstart guide).
- Intel Mac: Superwhisper recommends using cloud models. According to the manufacturer, local models work best on Apple Silicon devices.
- Windows with ARM Chip: Wispr Flow is not supported. Superwhisper runs on x64 and ARM64, but local models only work with the Parakeet Multilanguage model.
- Licensing: A Superwhisper Pro license covers any number of devices and your mobile phone. Wispr Flow is priced per user.
Offline and Local Processing
This is the most significant difference. According to Wispr Flow, every dictation is processed in the cloud. Without an internet connection, you cannot dictate.
Superwhisper gives you a choice. You download the local models once, ranging from 75 MB to 3 GB, depending on the model. After that, dictation works without an internet connection. According to the Sensitive Data documentation, you can also run the AI post-processing locally, ensuring that neither audio nor text leaves your device.
The catch: local does not always mean everything stays local. If a mode uses a cloud model for post-processing, your text leaves the device again. Check every mode before dictating confidential content.
Data Privacy for Businesses
Wispr Flow transmits data to the United States, as detailed in the Privacy Policy. You can disable data training in the settings. Disabling cloud storage will also ensure that Wispr deletes the audio after transcription. A data processing agreement is only offered from the Growth plan onwards, as outlined in the pricing table. You can find more details in Wispr Flow in German.
Superwhisper doesn’t require a server for your language when using local models. The manufacturer states that cloud models have agreements in place that ensure no data is stored with any AI providers. You can independently sign a data processing agreement, as indicated on the Compliance page. When using your own API key, cloud processing is governed by your own agreement with the provider. The Privacy Policy, dated June 19, 2024, only describes local processing. Refer to the documentation for information on cloud models.
AI service providers generally recommend: avoiding passwords, personal data, and customer data. I also emphasize this in my courses. This applies to any dictation sent to the cloud. If you need to dictate such content, Superwhisper with local models is the more secure option. However, always discuss implementation with your data protection officer. I do not provide legal advice.
Pricing Details
As of October 13, 2026, according to the manufacturer’s websites:
- Wispr Flow Pro: US$15 per month or US$12 per month with an annual subscription, totaling US$144 per year.
- Superwhisper Pro: US$8.49 per month, US$84.99 per year, or a one-time payment of US$249.99. The manufacturer offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
A one-time license for Superwhisper costs approximately the same as 1.7 years of Wispr Flow Pro with an annual subscription. With Superwhisper, you can continue using the software for free: local Whisper models are available for unlimited use. Wispr Flow limits its free plan to 2,000 words per week on desktop.
Price is a minor factor for me. In my videos, I estimate using around 30,000 to 40,000 words per month. At that volume, I find Wispr Flow to be very affordable.
German Language Support
Wispr Flow supports over 100 languages, including German and a Swiss variant that uses “ss” instead of “ß.” In my daily use, the German recognition works well. I supplement names and technical terms in the dictionary.
With Superwhisper, German language support depends on the model. According to the Model Overview, the cloud model S1-Voice and the multilingual Whisper models support over 100 languages. The local model Cohere Transcribe supports 14 languages, including German. Some models only understand English. Therefore, when setting up, be sure to check which model your chosen mode uses.
My Recommendations Based on Your Needs
Want to get started quickly and use it on all your devices: Wispr Flow. You install it, press a key, and start speaking. That’s how I use it.
Your language data must not leave your device: Superwhisper with local models. This is particularly important if you regularly dictate customer data or health information.
You often work without an internet connection: Superwhisper. Wispr Flow does not work offline.
Windows laptop with an ARM chip: Superwhisper. Wispr Flow is not compatible.
Mac with macOS 12 or 13: Wispr Flow. Superwhisper requires macOS 14.
Team requiring a data processing agreement and SSO: Both are possible. Wispr Flow is available from the Growth plan, while Superwhisper offers it through Enterprise. Compare the offers directly.
I’m sticking with Wispr Flow because it works seamlessly across all my applications, and I dictate a large volume of text with it. If you want to try it out, start with the free plan.
I compare other dictation tools like VoiceInk, MacWhisper, and Aqua Voice in Wispr Flow Alternatives. I demonstrate how I work with Claude Code using voice in Claude Code in German. My complete toolkit is listed in AI Tools for Freelancers.
