Instagram Lead Generation: From Video Viewer to Email Subscriber

By . Published October 21, 2026, updated October 21, 2026. 6 min read.

Instagram lead generation through simple videos and a free book. My four-step process turns comments into email contacts, with no ad spend in this example.

I run my business in Germany. Monetary examples use euros unless another currency is stated.

A video gets views, likes, and comments. That looks good. But you don’t know who these people are, and you can’t reach them again. You can’t send them another message or ask what they’ll be doing next.

That’s why I’m particularly interested in email addresses. In this article, I’ll show you how to turn a simple video into an email contact, without any advertising costs, using data from my own videos.

Attention is Expensive

Acquiring new customers involves three things. You want to get attention affordably. You want to connect with people who are interested in your topic affordably. And you want to convert those contacts into profit.

Provocative statements can get you a lot of attention, but they rarely generate profit. You need to identify topics that interest a large number of people, especially people who would buy from you.

Paid advertising is a direct route, but it’s expensive. On Facebook, a single click can quickly cost between €3 and €5. If you send those visitors directly to a sales page, maybe 1% will actually buy. Whether your product costs €50 or €500, you’ll spend a lot of money and get little back. The less you pay for each contact, the more profit you’ll keep.

The Strategy: Video, Comment, Book

The strategy is simple. You record a video, for example, for Instagram. You share something interesting related to your topic. At the end, you invite viewers to leave a comment. In return, you offer them your book for free.

In my finance videos, it sounds like this: “If you want to invest better in stocks, comment with ‘book’.” People comment with “book.” I respond to every comment: “I just sent you a message.” The message contains a link. Those who click enter their email address and receive the book.

Anyone who comments is interested in your topic. That’s the core principle. An anonymous person from the vastness of the internet raises their hand and says, “Yes, I want to learn more about this.”

Why a Book is So Easily Accepted

Most people scroll through their feeds casually. They might be on the train or just walking from the kitchen to the couch. They see something that interests them, but they don’t have time right now. No time for a one-hour lecture. No time for a lengthy questionnaire before an initial consultation. And no time for a scheduled appointment on a Friday morning, because the children have somewhere to be.

However, they always have time for two fields: their name and email address, and often just the email address. They’ll read the book when it suits them. You might not know if they actually read it, but you have their contact information. You can reach these people as often as you like, until they unsubscribe.

What an Email Address is Worth

Many people have been on my email list for ten years. I originally paid around €3 for each of those addresses. With those customers, I’ve earned €50,000.

Many entrepreneurs don’t realize the power of a large list. Each address brings you approximately a few euros every month. Over ten years, that adds up to a significant amount of money. And behind each address is a person who is genuinely interested in your business, a potential buyer who could spend hundreds or even thousands of euros.

Likes don’t interest me. Followers look nice, but they don’t particularly interest me either. I’m interested in email addresses. I explain in detail why having your own list is so important in the article Build an Email List.

Three Examples with Real Numbers

My videos are simple. Many are recorded with my phone. I publish them, and Instagram automatically distributes them.

  • An Elon Musk Post. In one video, I showed a post by Elon Musk on X, featuring a stock market prediction. At the end, I included the invitation: “If you want to invest better in stocks, comment with ‘book’.” I typically pay €10 to advertise a finance email address. This video brought me addresses worth €620, and it cost me €0.
  • A Selfie with My Phone. My most successful video is a simple selfie. It has 91,000 views and reached 74,000 people. That resulted in 95 email addresses, at a cost of €0.
  • 114 Comments. Under a third video, there were 114 comments. That generated 50 email addresses. Advertising would have cost me around €500.

Here’s how to calculate your results: For every comment saying “book,” I respond, creating a second comment. Divide the number of comments by two, and subtract a small amount. That will give you a rough estimate of how many addresses your video generated.

For getting started, I recommend Instagram. Create an account, record a video with your phone, and include a clear invitation at the end. That way, you can reach thousands of people.

This Works in Every Industry

With this approach, I can target any industry. I could sell yachts, luxury real estate, or divorce counseling. You just need the right title for your book.

A person has a desire or a problem. They see a book title that perfectly addresses that need and sign up. At that point, it’s highly likely that the topic genuinely interests them. This is how you make invisible customers visible. The more precisely your topic resonates with a specific group, the better the connections you’ll make. You can find guidance on selecting that group in the article Narrowing Your Target Audience.

From Contact to Conversation

With the email address, you can follow up. For example, you could ask: “You downloaded my book. Are you actively looking to address this topic, or are you simply exploring your options?” Those who respond will show you where they stand. Then, ask further: What’s currently holding you back? What’s your biggest challenge right now? This is how a real conversation begins.

At the same time, you’ll be perceived as an expert. You provide value first and explain your topic before attempting to sell anything.

This requires patience. On the first day, only a few people will buy, typically 1 to 2 percent. The others will buy later. My experience shows that those who sign up for a book on stocks almost always purchase something related to stocks within the next twelve months, a coaching session, a consultation, or a service. The question is simply, from whom.

Many business owners send new contacts five promotional emails with “Limited-time offer.” After that, those contacts never hear from them again. The one who stays engaged will ultimately make the sale. A simple email that I use to re-engage inactive contacts is the 7-Word Email.

Staying Engaged Rather Than Seeking the Next Trick

Most people look at a strategy like this, find it good, and then quickly try another trick. I have made plenty of videos just for reach. Without taking the step to capture email addresses, those videos generate no revenue. The path from video to email contact is what generates income.

I’ve been using books as an entry point ever since I was 15. A book on a particular topic, collecting contacts around that topic, and then selling through email. It still works today.

Your first step is small. Choose a topic that truly concerns your ideal customers. Create a simple video using your phone. Clearly state at the end what you want viewers to comment on and what they will receive in return. And instead of counting likes, focus on collecting email addresses.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lead, simply explained?
A lead is a contact of someone who has shown interest in your topic. Typically, this is their email address. For example, they might have commented “book” on one of your videos and then signed up to receive your free ebook. In doing so, they distinguish themselves from the anonymous crowd. You know what they are interested in, and you can reach out to them again.
How does lead generation work?
Here's my process, in four steps. I publish a simple video on my topic. At the end, I invite viewers to comment using the word “book.” Following each comment, I send a message with a link. By clicking the link, viewers enter their email address and receive the book. Afterwards, I stay in touch with them via email.
What's the best way to generate leads?
Use a free offer that your ideal customers want and make it easy to access. I use books for this. Someone casually scrolling on their phone has no time for a long questionnaire or a scheduled appointment. They do have time to fill in two fields. With simple videos on Instagram, I get leads with €0 in advertising costs.
What does a lead cost on Meta?
That depends on the industry and the specific offering. In my financial sector, I typically pay around €10 for an email address through advertising. A single click on Facebook can quickly cost between €3 and €5. However, with a simple video that includes a call to action, I can generate leads without any advertising costs. One such video generated addresses worth €620.
Are newsletters still worthwhile?
Yes. Many people have been on my email list for ten years. For some addresses, I initially paid €3, and I’ve earned €50,000 from those customers. Each address typically brings in a few euros for you every month. On Instagram, you don't know who is watching your videos. With email, you can reach these people as often as you like, until they unsubscribe.
How much money can you earn with 1,000 followers on Instagram?
The number of followers says little about your revenue. I'm not really interested in followers; I'm interested in email addresses, because that's how I can reach these people again. My most successful video had 91,000 views and generated 95 email addresses. Behind each one is a potential customer, potentially worth hundreds or even thousands of euros.
