Instagram Ads Cost: What I Pay per Lead and How I Run Them

By . Published October 30, 2026, updated October 30, 2026. 5 min read.

Instagram ads from my own ad account: what a lead costs in the feed, Reels and Stories, why I do not tap “Boost” and how to get contacts on Instagram without any ad budget.

I run my business in Germany. Monetary examples use euros unless another currency is stated.

My Instagram ads run together with Facebook, from the same Meta ad account. Still, it is worth looking at Instagram on its own. From October 16 to 29, 2026, Instagram brought 182 leads for 319.50 euros. That is 1.76 euros per lead. On Facebook, it was 2.11 euros.

In this article, I show you what Instagram ads cost me, how I run them and how you can win contacts on Instagram without any budget.

What Instagram ads cost

My book ads on Instagram from October 16 to 29, 2026:

Placement Spend Leads Cost per lead
Feed 185.97 € 95 1.96 €
Reels 80.94 € 54 1.50 €
Stories 51.67 € 32 1.61 €
Total 319.50 € 182 1.76 €

A lead is a contact who signs up for one of my free books. A click cost 52 cents in Reels, 57 cents in Stories and 72 cents in the feed. 1,000 impressions cost 15.19 to 19.67 euros. For comparison: On Facebook, 1,000 impressions cost only 12.29 euros in the same period. Instagram was still cheaper per lead. The reason: More people click on the ad on Instagram.

This is how you work out your budget: the leads you want times the cost per lead. If you want 10 leads per day and a lead costs you 2 euros, you need about 20 euros per day. You only know your real cost after a test, though. It depends mainly on your offer. In the same period, a lead cost me 1.50 euros for one book and more than 20 euros for another.

How I run Instagram ads

  1. Professional account: Your Instagram account has to be a professional account, either business or creator. You switch it in the settings.
  2. Connect it to your Facebook Page: Meta runs Instagram ads through your Facebook Page and your ad account.
  3. Campaign in Ads Manager: Objective leads, one audience, one daily budget. I start with 20 euros per day per campaign.
  4. Select your Instagram account in the ad: Then the ad appears under your name and profile picture.
  5. Automatic placements: I let Meta decide whether the ad runs in the feed, in Reels or in Stories. The table shows why: Reels and Stories were the cheapest.

How I set up campaign, ad set and ad in detail is covered in Meta Ads for Business Owners.

Why I do not tap “Boost”

The fastest way to an Instagram ad is the button below a post. A few taps, and your Reel runs as an ad. I do not use it.

With this button, you only choose basic objectives aimed at attention. I have measured what that brings: 21 ads with my Reels mostly ran on engagement. They did not bring a single purchase. Ads with a book image and the objective leads, on the other hand, brought 46 of 81 tracked purchases since February 2025.

Likes do not pay bills. Contacts do, if you patiently offer them something afterwards.

What goes into the ad

  • An image from the customer’s point of view: What does the customer see once they have the result? I also test the plain book cover.
  • A short text with the outcome: Not “Read my book”, but what the reader can do afterwards. With the audience in the first sentence.
  • The “Download” button: It brings the most signups for my book ads.
  • A fast page behind it: About 36 out of 100 clicks on my Instagram ads turn into a signup. Almost everyone uses Instagram on the phone. So test your page on a phone before you spend money.

Instagram without any ad budget: my comment route

It also works for free. Below my Reels, I write in the Instagram caption: “Comment BOOK …” (in German, the word is BUCH). Anyone who comments the word automatically gets a message from a chat program with the link to my free book. In the chat, I then invite them to my live workshop on Sunday.

Three rules I follow:

  • The call to action only goes in the caption, never in the video itself. The video should work without advertising.
  • Only on Instagram. On Facebook, TikTok and YouTube, I do not ask people to comment. Facebook shows such calls to comment to fewer people.
  • One word, one destination. BUCH always leads to the same book. That keeps it simple.

This costs no ad budget, but it takes time for videos people want to watch. How a viewer becomes an email contact is described in Instagram Lead Generation.

How long I test an Instagram ad

A test runs for at least 14 days with a fixed measurement date. Before that, I only change something if there is an error. Meta needs a few days to learn who signs up. If you adjust the budget or the image every day, you disrupt this learning and cannot tell what worked in the end.

On the measurement date, I mainly compare the cost per lead. The cheaper ad keeps running, the more expensive one gets switched off.

Are Instagram ads worth it for you?

Yes, if three things are true. Your offer has enough margin to keep ads affordable. You promote something free instead of selling directly. And you stay in touch with your new contacts afterwards. The full calculation is in Are Facebook Ads Worth It?. It applies to Instagram just the same.

Also, speak to only one audience per campaign. Why that lowers your cost is explained in Choose a Niche Target Market.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an ad on Instagram cost?
You set the amount yourself, there is no fixed price per ad. From October 16 to 29, 2026, 1,000 impressions on Instagram cost me 15 to 20 euros, a click 52 to 72 cents and a lead 1.50 to 1.96 euros. A lead is a contact who signs up for my free book. In your industry, the numbers can be different.
How do you run ads on Instagram?
Switch your Instagram account to a professional account and connect it to your Facebook Page. Then create a campaign in Meta Ads Manager, choose an objective, an audience and a budget, and select your Instagram account in the ad. I almost always choose leads as the objective.
Why can't I run ads on Instagram?
Often the professional account or the connection to a Facebook Page is missing. Some posts also cannot be promoted, for example because of the music they use. That is why I build my ads in Ads Manager instead of the app.
Is it worth boosting an Instagram post?
For more likes, maybe. For customers, rarely. With “Boost” in the app, you only choose basic objectives. 21 of my ads with Reels mostly ran on engagement and did not bring a single purchase. Ads with the objective leads for a free book, on the other hand, brought most of my tracked purchases.
Can people tell if a post is an ad?
Yes. Instagram labels paid ads as “Sponsored” by itself, so you do not need to take care of that. I additionally always label AI-generated images in my ads. Meta offers a dedicated setting for this.
Are Instagram ads worth it?
For me, yes. From October 16 to 29, 2026, a lead on Instagram cost 1.76 euros, on Facebook 2.11 euros. It only pays off if you do not sell directly, but first collect contacts, for example with a free book, and then make your offer patiently.
